Kalkeri Sangeet Vidyalaya - Monthly Newsletter

Welcome to the December Newsletter. This month, we had the honour of welcoming several prestigious musicians to the KSV campus, we also welcomed two groups of fellows from different fellowship programs, some of the KSV tabla students attended a tabla workshop, we had an energy-packed day when the Jagriti Yatra came to KSV, and all this took place amongst lots of our regular activities including two Manch Pradharsan sessions.

We hope that you enjoy catching up with our news from December at KSV?

Much Love

The KSV Family

Our Benefactors

This month, our benefactors in the spotlight are India on Bullet from France. India on Bullet is the creation of Sylvain and Mathieu, two modern-day French explorers, musicians and filmmakers who set out to follow the ancient silk route from India all the way back to France, riding the whole way on classic motorcycles with recording gear in tow.

All along their journey, Sylvain and Mathieu highlighted musical and social projects happening across 17 countries. Institute after institute, microphones and cameras in their hands, they recorded and filmed children singing traditional songs from their native countries.

Upon their return to France they set about creating an album of all the recordings from the journey. All proceeds from the album sales were donated to the organizations where the recordings took place.

You can see the recording they did with some students at KSV here.

All the KSV Family are wholeheartedly thankful to the Sylvain and Mathieu for their valuable support.

Manch Pradharsan

This month, there were two Manch Pradharsan sessions; all the students gave excellent performances that were greatly appreciated by the students, staff, and volunteers.

The Manch Pradharsan sessions are empowering for the students as they have the opportunity to showcase the outcome of all their hard work and effort, and their Guru’s performances are inspiring for the students which serves to further motivate them onwards in their musical journey.

Aishwarya Desai, a young up-and-coming vocalist from Dharwad, and student of Pandit Venkatesh Kumar decided to celebrate her 22nd birthday at KSV.

For the occasion, her father, Shri Uday Desai, invited Ustad Chhote Rahimat Khan and Ustad Shafique Khan, both renowned sitar artists and also brothers of one of KSV’s founders, Ustad Hameed Khan.

The KSV students opened the program with a prayer song which was followed by a wonderful vocal performance from Aishwarya, and to conclude the morning’s event we were treated to a mesmerising sitar recital from Ustads Chhote Rahimat & Shafique Khan. Accompanying on tabla for the morning was the versatile and enthralling Pandit Satlingappa Desai Kallur.

We are extremely grateful to all the musicians for taking time out of their busy schedules to share with us their passion and talent which was a real treat for us all.

Pandit Ravindra Yavagal & Kiran Yavagal

We were treated to yet another visit from a great and renowned artist. This time it was our great pleasure to welcome Pandit Ravindra Yavagal and his son Kiran Yavagal. Both father and son are extremely talented tabla artists.

Pandit Ravindra Yavagal began learning the tabla when he was just four from his father Ramachandra Yavagal. He continued under Veeranna Kamkar of Gayathri Gayana Shaala, Hubballi, and later received intense training as a disciple of Pandit Sheshagiri Hanagal. Pandit Ji has accompanied hundreds of vocalists and instrumentalists in India and abroad.

Pandit Ji took the time to go around the school and visit some of the music classes, after which he and his son Kiran treated us to an enthralling tabla recital.

IIT Bombay Tata Fellows Visit

This is the third year that we have welcomed a group of students and their faculty from IIT Bombay. A visit to KSV is a part of a small tour they undertake in the south of India. The visit is an opportunity for the students to better understand a social-enterprise model.

There was a presentation of KSV which was followed by a tour of the campus and a Q&A session. We made positive links and forged personal connections for future opportunities for recruiting volunteers, sponsors and instigating other interesting projects.

Ashoka University - Mother Teresa Fellows Visit

We had yet another visit from a well-known fellowship program; this time, it was the turn of the Mother Teresa Fellowship program from Ashoka University to visit KSV.

The Mother Teresa Fellowship is an early career program that supports selected, high potential graduates from Ashoka University working full-time in the social impact sector. the program provides mentorship, capacity building, networking and community building support.

The fellows had a presentation of the KSV model, a tour of the campus which was followed by a Q&A session.

Tabla Workshop

A select group of KSV’s tabla students had the opportunity to attend a two-day tabla workshop in Dharwad that was organised Girish Patil, and other students of Ustad Nisar Ahmed.

The KSV students were very happy to be a part of the workshop where they took on board lots of new knowledge.

We are grateful to Ustad Ji and his students for organising the workshop and welcoming the KSV students.

Jagriti Yatra at KSV

On what is without a doubt one of the busiest days of the year for us we once again were delighted to welcome the Jagriti Yatra to the KSV campus for the first stop of their 15-day journey of discovery and transformation which sees 450 young people circumnavigate the country by train stopping on the way to meet role models, change-makers, and leaders.

The morning speaker sessions were followed by a tour of the campus; we had split the Yatris up into eight groups, but still, there were more than fifty people in each group! During the tour, they visited eight different locations on the campus where we highlighted various aspects of the school, the campus and the work we are undertaking.

After the tour, there was time for lunch before the main event in the afternoon which was a cultural program performed by our students. This is always a highlight for both the Yatris and the KSV students who are very happy and proud to showcase their talents to a large audience.

All-in-all a great day that was filled with energy, inspiration, curiosity, and optimism. Yaaron Chalo!
